Sientra’s Silicone Breast Implants get FDA’s Approval
Story by Elise Brooks
Nip Tuck News staff writer
On March 9, 2012 the FDA approved Sientra's new silicone gel breast implants for the U.S. market. This may be good news for American's seeking another breast implant option for cosmetic breast surgery or reconstructive breast surgery. The FDA's approval of the Sientra implant is based after 3 years of clinical trial data on 1788 women with Sientra silicone breast implants.
Currently, the two other FDA approved breast implant manufacturers in the United States are Mentor breast implants and Allergan. The FDA has ruled that breast implants from these three companies are safe, but they advise women that implants should have follow up monitoring just to be on the safe side.
Beverly Hills & Orange County plastic surgeon, Dr. Corbin states, "I can't force patients to come in for annual check ups, or to do MRI's but I do inform my patients on all aspects of plastic surgery and I do recommend regular follow up after breast surgery as well. I try to be an advocate for my patients and give them the information I would want my mother, daughter, sister, wife or girlfriend to have before and after surgery. I educate my patients and it is up to the patient how they wish to use this education."
In a press release from the FDA it states that,"Data on these and other approved silicone gel–filled breast implants continue to demonstrate a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness," said William Maisel, MD,deputy director for science in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health
Currently there are many choices for breast implants ranging from saline to silicone, size, projection, texture, shape and widths. With more choices may come better surgical outcomes to reach the aesthetic goals of the plastic surgeon and the patient.
According to Sientra's website, "We are proud to offer the Silimed® brand portfolio of products. Our portfolio of breast implants is designed to offer solutions for augmentation, correction or reconstruction of the breast. We provide the discriminating surgeon a broad array of implant options. You can choose the implant that best suits your patient, whether it is round or shaped; smooth or textured; and with varying heights and projections."
Dr. Frederic Corbin recognizes the importance of educating his patients on the potential benefits and risks of breast surgery as well as on breast implant options. According to The breast expert, "An informed patient is the best patient because it helps eliminate unrealistic surgical expectations."
While Dr. Corbin educates his patients on their implant options, the best surgical approach for them, including the risks and benefits of breast surgery, he also recommends regular follow up visits. Not only does this Beverly Hills plastic surgeon extend this advice to his recent post operative patients he also offers continuing care for them years after their initial breast surgery. "I am always here for my patients 24/7 should they have questions or concerns regarding any aspect of their surgery or breast implants. I think open and honest communication about surgery, breast implants and follow up adds to a closer Doctor patient relationship that lasts for years. I have some patients who have been with me for over 20 years!"
Dr. Corbin's patient Megan says "I have been a patient of Dr. Corbin's since I was 18 years old. I got breast implants at a young age and he has been there for me through the many changes I have gone through over the last 10 years , like weight gain, weight loss, pregnancy and my post baby body phase. I can always count on Dr. Corbin for a straight forward honest recommendation for surgery as well as breast implant choice. I am confident in his years of experience as a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon."
Education on breast surgery and the various breast implant options may be a key part of a successful surgery. In addition to knowledge, a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in all aspects of breast surgery including breast surgery revisions and breast reconstruction is important. According to the FDA breast implants are not lifetime devices so proper follow up monitoring is also recommended for the best long term outcomes of breast implant surgeries.
